There’s nothing quite like a Kettle’s Yard concert. To sit surrounded by art as the music plays, to catch a glimpse of the current exhibition or to refresh yourself with a drink in the interval, all these contribute to a perfect evening. And this coming year is particularly special as we mark the 70th anniversary of Kettle’s Yard first opening to visitors in 1957.
Justin Lee, our Chamber Music Programmer, has created a series which features some of our best-loved performers, many of whom played at Kettle’s Yard early in their careers and have returned many times since to delight us as they progressed. These Kettle’s Yard ‘alumni’ invariably remember their early performances here fondly, often evoking Jacqueline du Pré’s sentiments from her opening concert in 1970 about the elation she experienced here, playing ‘in a beautiful place where art is a very treasured thing’.
We are pleased to welcome many of them to Kettle’s Yard again as we celebrate. Amongst these old friends we have the Doric Quartet – who enjoyed a residency here some 25 years ago, the Brodsky Quartet (our archive holds programmes of theirs from the past five decades), Tom Poster and his friends (Tom remembers playing our Steinway as a boy in short trousers), the Heath Quartet and Nash Ensemble (frequent visitors over the years) and the Maxwell Quartet whom we filmed here in 2020 to raise our spirits during the Covid-19 lockdown.
