Works in the House

Displayed in the Bechstein Room were works by Chilean artist Fernando Casasempere (b. 1958) which explored the artist’s three sources of inspiration: pre-Hispanic heritage, the Chilean landscape and the artist’s life in London. A painting made from clay on felt temporarily replaced Roger Hilton’s October 1955 Calm (Black, Grey, Brown and White), offering an alternative approach to landscape, place and time.

Six black and white photographs by American photographer Mariana Cook (b. 1955) were presented in the intimate space of Helen Ede’s bedroom. The contemplative images, some of which were captured by the artist during the last ten days of her mother’s life, included abstractions of interior spaces, everyday objects, light and shadow.

In the Attic, a selection of works on paper by Spanish artists Eduardo Chillida (1924-2002) and Blanca Miró Skoudy (b. 1987) interacted with prints and drawings by Henri Gaudier-Brzeska from the Kettle’s Yard collection. A selection of Chillida’s ink drawings made for Reflections, the first artist’s book published by Ivorypress, were shown alongside Miró Skoudy’s line drawings of abstracted bodies inspired by Cubism and Surrealism.

Displayed on the table in the Library was an artist’s book by Richard Long(b. 1945) titled Walking and Sleeping documenting 10 routes and 7 walks taken by the artist. Each page represented one day, exploring ideas of time, space, place and distance through the artist’s photographs, texts and original mud drawings.
