In 2024, we launched an open call, inviting young people aged 4 – 21 from across the city of Cambridge to paint what matters to them. The subsequent exhibition Paint What Matters!, celebrates the talent and creativity of children and young people in Cambridge, showcasing the work of over 500 young artists.
In this blog post we’re going to explore some of the key themes that have emerged within the works of art on display.
Climate Change
From the artworks, it is clear that protecting nature and the environment is hugely important to children and young people. Many artists have depicted the earth, endangered animals and the sea.
Family and Friends
Many artworks show gratitude and appreciation for family and friends.
Social Justice
Many artworks have expressed concern for social causes, using art as a space to explore their values and beliefs.
Animals
Another key theme that can be seen when you visit the exhibition is animals. Many artworks feature much-loved pets, or favourite animals – we have everything from cats to dragons!
In this exhibition, young people have shown us that art is an important way to communicate thoughts and feelings. The artwork of these young artists offer us hope for the future.
Our young artists have responded to so many different subjects which matter to them. We have created a self-care guide which includes signposts to organisations and support for young people who can access support if needed.
