Sonita Alleyne, OBE

Sonita was elected Master of Jesus College Cambridge in 2019. Along with focusing on the students, Fellows, staff and the wider College community, she is the outward-facing leader of the College within the University, and acts as an ambassador for the College to the wider public. She believes academic curiosity flourishes in a caring environment and that university is a great time to keep exploring who you are and what you want to do with your life. She leads the governing body of the college, chairs a number of committees and is proud to have founded the Jesus College Creative Practice Committee.

Sonita’s current external board roles include the Creative PEC Advisory Board which provides independent research and policy recommendations for the UK’s creative industry; the Screen Academy Foundation, which is a proactive funder dedicated to advancing the education of pupils at the London Screen Academy and East London Arts & Music; Chair of Cambridge University Centre for Music performance; Chair Cambridge University Careers Syndicate, and Wickes plc where she chairs their Responsible Business Committee.

Sonita won the Carlton Multicultural Achievement Award for TV and Radio. She is a fellow of The Royal Society of the Arts and the Radio Academy, and in 2003, was awarded an OBE for Services to Broadcasting. She is an honorary fellow of Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge and holds honorary Doctorates from the University of the West Indies and the University of Aberdeen. She is also Patron of the Red Hen Project in Cambridge.

Her previous board roles have included: The Main Advisory Committee and Chair of the Diversity Action Committee of the arts-focussed Freelands Foundation; the Cultural Capital Fund; Chair of the BBFC’s Management Committee; the BBC Trust; National Employment Panel; the London Skills and Employment Board; Chair of the Radio Sector Skills Council; non-executive director of the Department for Culture, Media and Sport; and membership of the Court of Governors at the University of the Arts London; a governor at the Museum of London and a non-executive director of the London Legacy Development Corporation.
