Teacher CPD: 'Paint What Matters!'

4 March 2025, 5-7.30pm (doors at 4.45pm)

All teaching staff are welcome, with a focus on Primary school teachers.

  • Looking to grow confidence in sculpting with natural or organic materials?
  • Wondering how to discuss climate change in a creative and child-friendly way?

Kettle’s Yard’s artist-led teacher CPD supports your teaching practice and development, providing you with inspiration and new approaches for your classroom.

During this CPD workshop, artist Joshua Bilton inspires you to use natural forms and create 3D structures. You will then explore colour with mixing ink and be guided by Josh to paint an interpretation of a bird’s migration.

Please note we have a maximum of 4 attendees per school.

This event has passed. £10, booking required

This session will begin with artist Joshua Bilton introducing his process and outcomes created with our partner school, Arbury Primary, for the Paint What Matters! exhibition. We will then journey to the galleries, where Josh will lead us in exploring the stories of migratory birds and support us to create sculptures from natural forms. Following this, we will venture back into the Clore Learning Studio for some abstract painting that communicates a bird’s-eye view on their journeys over land and sea.

Light refreshments will be served during the evening.

Please email schoolbookings@kettlesyard.cam.ac.uk with any queries.

About Joshua Bilton

Joshua Bilton is a visual artist making socially engaged artwork through workshops, performance and video. His current research is looking into how ritual, storytelling and myth-making can be used to connect communities to their natural environment. Within his work, Joshua is interested in creating social sculptures and participatory processes that make a collective space for gathering, healing, meditation, quietness and lament.

During the last two years the output of his work has taken the form of participatory performances, that include sound, choreography and audience interaction. These immersive performances have been shown as part of a 6 month residency at the Wellcome Collection, a two-year residency at the Canal and River Trust, a commission for Kettle’s Yard and a series of research workshops at Tate Exchange.

What Teachers Are Saying

Hear from previous attendees of our Teacher’s CPD events

I love how practical these teacher CPD’s are – very inspiring and helps get the creative juices flowing.

Thank you – I have so many new ideas to take back to the school. I’ll be looking to increase ‘ways in’ to creativity and ‘soften’ the pressure students feel to perform to certain standards.

Access

The Clore Learning Studio is fully accessible. It can be reached by stairs or by lift, select -1 in the lift. There is an accessible toilet in the basement beside the Learning Studio. There are more toilets and facilities on the ground and first floors.

During the event we will enter the gallery spaces. These spaces are fully accessible. Please let us know in advance if you have any specific access requirements and we can tailor the session to suit these.
