Teacher CPD: Another Chance Encounter

Tuesday 14 October, 5-7.30pm (doors at 4.45pm)

Join us at Kettle’s Yard for our autumn Teacher CPD where Associate Artist Facilitator, Sandra Scott, will explore our current exhibition Lubaina Himid with Magda Stawarska: Another Chance Encounter, and the artists’ new temporary interventions in the Kettle’s Yard house.

Kettle’s Yard Teacher CPDs are suitable for teachers, teaching assistants and student teachers, who support individuals of all ages in various learning environments.

There will be light refreshments served during the evening.

Please note, we have a maximum of 4 attendees per school.

Book Now £10 (£5 partner school), booking required

Join artist Sandra Scott to explore how memories and storytelling can be embodied in our identities. You will spend time in the exhibition Lubaina Himid with Magda Stawarska: Another Chance Encounter to discover how the artists have used colours and grids as a metaphor for community and connecting ideas, feelings and thoughts. Directly inspired by Lubaina Himid and Magda Stawarska’s interventions, Sandra will then guide you through the Kettle’s Yard house with focused drawing activities, considering memory and narrative found in personal connections with objects in the collection.

To support your practice back in your classroom, the session will reflect upon how young people can find their voice and celebrate their uniqueness through art. During the workshop you will bring together your individual findings to begin constructing an outcome that represents you. Using a base shape inspired by the house, you will build layers of grid work, playing with composition, and using printing techniques to add to your drawings.

Access

  • The Clore Learning Studio is fully accessible. It can be reached by stairs or by lift, select -1 in the lift. There is an accessible toilet in the basement beside the Learning Studio. There are more toilets and facilities on the ground and first floors.
  • During the event we will enter the gallery spaces. These spaces are fully accessible. Please let us know in advance if you have any specific access requirements and we can tailor the session to suit these. We also have a Sensory Map, which you can download here.
  • During this CPD, we will also enter the lower extension of the Kettle’s Yard house, which is accessible for wheelchair users via a ramp. Unfortunately, due to the historic nature of the building, 3/4 of the Kettle’s Yard house is inaccessible. Sandra will be offering participants the opportunity to visit the first floor of the extension to see additional works by Lubaina Himid and Magda Stawarska in closer detail. We can also offer digital access to these artworks via an iPad.

What Teachers Are Saying

Hear from previous attendees of our Teacher CPD:

I love how practical these teacher CPD’s are – very inspiring and helps get the creative juices flowing.

Thank you – I have so many new ideas to take back to the school. I’ll be looking to increase ‘ways in’ to creativity and ‘soften’ the pressure students feel to perform to certain standards.
