Studio Visit: Silversmith Hamish Dobbie

Saturday 27 July, 10.30-11.15am or 2.00-2.45pm

Join the Friends of Kettle’s Yard for a visit to Hamish Dobbie’s studio, a local silversmith.

Book Now £10 Friends, (£15 General), booking required

In 2021, St John’s College, Cambridge, commissioned six custom-designed silver beakers from Hamish Dobbie as ceremonial gifts to exceptional students, thanks to a bequest made by Sir Joseph Larmor. His work features in the collections of The National Museum of Scotland, The Pearson Collection as well as The Goldsmiths’ Company. More recently, the Contemporary Art Society, for which Jim Ede served as the secretary during the 1920s, acquired two of his silver beakers, Heavy Quarried Beaker and Misty Mountain Beaker (pictured below), for The Usher Gallery in Lincoln. During the studio visit, Hamish will discuss and demonstrate a variety of techniques, ranging from chasing, repoussé, engraving, and 3D printing, using finished pieces and works in progress. A key item that will be shown and discussed is a commission of a silver pineapple. On show will also be the variety of beakers that he produces in silver.

Further Information

Hamish’s studio is in his garden shed, which is why he can accommodate only five visitors during each of the two visits. We will meet at the Urban Larder (9 The Broadway, Cambridge CB1 3AH), from where he will take us to his studio.

All proceeds support Kettle’s Yard. Refunds are not possible, unless the visit is cancelled by Kettle’s Yard. Should the visit be sold out, please email to join the waiting list as we may organise additional visits.
