About Katharina Klug
Katharina Klug was born in Austria, and grew up in and around her mother’s pottery, beginning her life-long fascination with ceramics. She blends traditional and modern elements, drawing inspiration from ancient Korean and Japanese pottery. Her unique, handcrafted pieces are both beautiful and meaningful, reflecting her fascination with family bonds. Katharina plays with proportion and detail whilst attempting to maintain perfection in form. She draws onto the clay using crayons, and the glazes create contrast in each individual piece; inside vs. outside; colour vs. monochrome; gloss vs. matt. Each glaze is a mix of her own devising, the colours created from oxides such as copper and cobalt.
Katharina now lives and works in Cambridge and her work is praised by critics and collectors, earning her numerous awards.

My work is about simplicity of design and form. I am drawn to creating vessels of all kinds, and I am inspired by the elemental colour and shape of ancient Korean pottery as well as the outstanding works of Lucie Rie and Rupert Spira. I come from a family that has always been busy working with our hands, making things. I find white clay to be the perfect canvas for patterns, shapes and contrasting colours.
