Student Music: An Evening of Pop, Folk and Jazz
6 November 2025, 8pm (doors open at 7.30pm)
Join us for an evening of Pop, Folk and Jazz in the Kettle’s Yard house with student performers from the University of Cambridge: singer songwriter Greta Thompson, members of Cambridge University Jazz Orchestra, and alt-pop artist TXZZ.
Student singer–songwriters Greta Thompson and TXZZ – both prizewinners in the Hook, Line & Lyric songwriting competition – perform a range of their original music alongside a small band performance featuring members of the University’s premier Jazz Orchestra. Look forward to beautiful lyricism and dazzling solos in this special place.
About the Performers
Greta Thompson is a singer songwriter originally from southeast London. Between soulful ballads on the piano and ear-worm folk numbers on the guitar, her folk-pop song style explores the mixed feelings of modern life. Greta is also the frontwoman of Desk Rejection, where her style fuses with the jazz, funk and rock backgrounds of her band mates. With two sold-out solo shows at The Geldart under her belt, and mentoring from Polly Paulusma, Greta is looking forward to further musical adventures.
TXZZ is an electronic/experimental artist and producer who fuses elements of Carnatic music with electronic, R’n’B and alt pop. Her music has been featured on BBC Asian Network, and BBC Radio 6, and she is currently studying for a PhD in electronic engineering. Listen to her on Spotify.
The Cambridge University Jazz Orchestra (CUJO) is Cambridge’s premier vehicle for promoting and performing jazz in the University and beyond. CUJO brings together the top jazz musicians in the university. They have performed in numerous professional venues in the UK and overseas on national and international tours, won gold awards in UK-wide big band competitions and have collaborated with world-famous musicians, composers and arrangers such as Steve Waterman, Mark Nightingale, Trish Clowes and Yazz Ahmed.
Music at Kettle’s Yard
Music has always been an important part of Kettle’s Yard, and concerts have been played here since 1970, when the inaugural concert was given by Jacqueline du Pré accompanied by Daniel Barenboim. Kettle’s Yard creators, Jim and Helen Ede, made the new extension of Kettle’s Yard with music performances in mind and left instructions that there were to be ‘at least three really good concerts every year’.
Today we offer around twenty concerts a year.
