Sea to Shore: Paintings by Alfred Wallis and Christopher Wood
1 April – 27 August 2017
The Kettle’s Yard collection returned to the Fitzwilliam Museum for a third exhibition, this time bringing together paintings by Alfred Wallis and Christopher Wood that are inspired by the sea and shore.
From their first meeting in St Ives in 1928, Wallis’ untutored style and inventive use of materials had a marked effect on Wood’s stylistic development. He wrote:
“I am more and more influenced by Alfred Wallis, not a bad master though”
The artists continued to innovatively capture their experiences of the sea and life in port towns in their paintings and many of these are shown in this exhibition.
