Join the Friends of Kettle’s Yard for a very special talk with Tobias Vernon, the founder of 8 Holland Street, a gallery and design studio specialising in 20th century British art and modern European furniture, and Emma Burns, the joint managing director of England’s longest running interior decoration firm, Sibyl Colefax & John Fowler. Held in the modern extension of the Kettle’s Yard house, the conversation will be led by design journalist Aimee Farrell. Event organiser: Aimee Farrell

This informal in-person event will explore the influence of Jim Ede on the modern interior, considering the role of art in the decoration of the home, as well as delving into the influence of Kettle’s Yard on both Burns’ and Vernon’s highly distinctive – and very different – aesthetics. 

This event is part of an ongoing series of talks and events curated by Aimee Farrell, titled My Kettle’s Yard, examining the inspirational power of Jim Ede beyond fine art, within the spheres of fashion, interior decoration and design. Previous guests have included Sir Paul SmithJonathan Anderson and Frances Palmer.

About the Speakers

Emma Burns

Emma Burns is joint managing director of Sibyl Colefax & John Fowler – pre-eminent purveyors of the English country house style – having joined the firm in 1984. Inspired by her love of art and design, Emma heads up an interior design team who have worked on high-profile private commissions all over the world, including a camp in Wisconsin, townhouses in Moscow and Paris, and numerous city and country homes across the United Kingdom.

Tobias Vernon

Tobias Vernon is the founder of the art and design studio, and gallery, 8 Holland Street, established in 2018. Known for his eclectic approach to curating, 8 Holland Street specialises in modern British art, European vintage furniture and global ceramics, beautifully displayed in their Bath and London galleries. In 2023, 8 Holland Street opened a second London space in a grand 18th century Georgian townhouse just off St James’s Park. Vernon studied history of art at Cambridge.

Aimee Farrell

Aimee Farrell is a writer and consultant specialising in design, interiors and the visual arts. Her work is frequently published in The Financial Times’ HTSI magazine, where she is a contributing editor, as well as The New York Times Style Magazine, T, and British Vogue, where she worked for more than a decade. She lives in Cambridge, and is a member of the Kettle’s Yard Friends Events Committee.

 

Access

There is level access from Castle Street. From Northampton Street there is stepped access to Kettle’s Yard. There are automatic doors at the entrance to Kettle’s Yard.

The ground floor extension area of the house is accessible for wheelchair users with a ramp. There is no lift in the house.
