fig-futures, WEEK 4 / PATRICK COYLE AND FRANCESCO PEDRAGLIO

Across four weeks Kettle’s Yard presented a programme of quick-fire exhibitions, each lasting for only one week.

New performances and installations by Patrick Coyle and Francesco Pedraglio took place in week four. Coyle and Pedraglio developed ambitious complementary projects through long-distance conversations from their homes in New York and Mexico City respectively. The new live works and installations responded to Kettle’s Yard’s collection and history.

Coyle’s new installation and performance Panoram saw the artist use domestic objects and interiors to narrate personal anecdotes about private and public spaces as well as the production of the exhibition itself. His installation in the Sackler Gallery depicted residential spaces, including household objects and large-scale textile prints of domestic interiors.

In Pedraglio’s new body of works titled Spoken Sculpture, each piece is a composite installation for the wall linked to a short script. Striving for a circular equivalence between objects and words, the sculptures were assembled live as if they were paragraphs of the very same script Pedraglio was performing. In Gallery 2, the new installation drew together objects and materials that he had made alongside works from Kettle’s Yard’s collection.

The artists’ new works were activated through live performances during the opening event on 2 October.

About Patrick Coyle

Patrick Coyle is an artist working predominantly with performance, writing and sculpture.

He recently delivered performances at Tŷ Pawb, Wrexham; Haltemprice Leisure Centre, East Riding of Yorkshire; 53 Beck Road, London; The Enemies Project, Austrian Cultural Forum, London; Global Committee, New York; El Tercer Lugar, Buenos Aires; Westminster Reference Library, London; Catalyst Arts, Belfast; Van Alen Institute, New York; Tate Modern, London; Institute of Contemporary Arts, London and Nottingham Contemporary.

Coyle recently contributed texts to The Cambridge Literary Review Issue 8/9; A Circular 2 and 3; Invisible Fabrick (Norwich); Dear World & Everyone In It, New Poetry in the UK (Bloodaxe Books, Northumberland) and his book /pe(ə)r/, was published by Wysing Arts Centre in 2013.

Coyle completed a residency at The Hub, Wellcome Collection, London (2014-16) and was a member of The Disembodied Voice research group (2014-16).

About Francesco Pedraglio

Francesco Pedraglio is an artist working with writing, performance, film and installation. He was born in Como, Italy. He lives in between London and Mexico City.

Recent exhibitions include: Kunstverein Munich, Munich (2017); PAKT, Amsterdam (2017); CRAC Alsace (2017); Jose Garcia ,mx, Mexico City (2016); Instituto Svizzero, Milan (2016); Sheffield Fringe, Sheffield (2016); Parallel Oaxaca, Oaxaca, Mexico (2015); Norma Mangione Gallery, Turin (2015); The Physics Room, Christchurch, New Zealand (2015); Kunsthalle Wien (2015).

A collection of poems titled 99 Battle and 1 War (an extract) was published by Piano Nobile (CH) in 2016. His novel A man in a room spray painting a fly was published by Book Works in 2014.

Together with Tania Pérez Córdova, Pedraglio runs the publishing house Juan de la Cosa / John of the Thing.

In 2007 he initiated the London art space FormContent.

About fig-futures

fig-futures was a project supported by Arts Council England, Art Fund, and Outset and followed the major project fig-2 in which 50 projects were presented across 50 weeks at the Institute of Contemporary Arts, London in 2015. fig-futures took the one-week exhibition structure along with fig-2 alumni artists to four venues across the UK including Grundy Art Gallery, Blackpool; Kettle’s Yard; The Gallery at De Montfort University, Leicester; and Plymouth Arts Centre.
