fig-futures WEEK 1 / EVA ROTHSCHILD + JOE MORAN

Across four weeks Kettle’s Yard presented a programme of quick-fire exhibitions, each lasting for only one week.
Fig-futures began at Kettle’s Yard with a presentation of A Setup, a collaboration between sculptor Eva Rothschild and choreographer Joe Moran. Rothschild’s sculptural structures occupied Gallery 1 along with two dancers who performed Moran’s Singular, exploring the idea of a single consciousness embodied in more than one form, live in the spaces each day during the exhibition.
Films by both Rothschild and Moran were shown in Gallery 2 including Rothschild’s Boys with Sculpture, which follows a group of young boys as they are invited to enter a gallery full of her sculptures, gradually exploring the objects they find and interacting with them to the point of near destruction.

About Eva Rothschild
Eva Rothschild was born in Dublin and studied at the University of Ulster, Belfast, and at Goldsmith’s College, London.
Rothschild’s work has been the focus of major public commissions, including Cold Corners, commissioned for the Duveen Galleries, Tate Britain, London, 2009, and Empire, a monumental, multidirectional archway in Central Park, for the Public Art Fund, New York, 2011. Rothschild was elected to the Royal Academy of Arts of London, England in 2014; and was most recently announced as Irish representative for the 58th International Art Exhibition, Venice Biennale, 2019.

About Joe Moran
Joe Moran is a British-Irish choreographer with a wide-ranging practice incorporating touring theatre and gallery works, lecture-performance and curatorial projects. His work tackles contemporary propositions in dance, performance and critical thought.
Recent commissions and performances include On The Habit of Being Oneself, Sadler’s Wells (Sept 2017), Indefinite Article, Whitechapel Gallery (July 2017), New Art Gallery Walsall (2017)’ Live Creations, a performance-based exhibition at Delfina Foundation (2016), A Setup, Block Universe/fig-2 at the ICA (2015) in collaboration with sculptor Eva Rothschild, David Roberts Art Foundation (Frieze 2014), Nottingham Contemporary (2014)’ Assembly (UK tour, 2014), The Modulated Body (2103) Ordovas gallery commission for its Bacon/Rodin exhibition, and The Place Prize (2013).
His first drawing exhibition Tracks and Lines was presented at Gallery Lejeune in 2015.
Joe is Artistic Director of Dance Art Foundation through which his performance and curatorial work is produced, Dance4 Associate Artist, Sadler’s Wells Summer University Artist (2015-2018) and was a UK Associate at Delfina Foundation (2016). He curated Dance Art Foundation’s two-year research programme Why Everyone Wants What We’ve Got and organises its ongoing Dance Critical Theory Group. As a dancer Joe worked with many distinguished choreographers including Deborah Hay (USA), Siobhan Davies (UK), Florence Peake (UK) and Pontus Pettersson (Sweden). His adaptation of Deborah Hay’s solo At Once and lecture-performance on the work has toured widely in the UK and internationally.
Joe Moran is currently artist in residence at Wysing Arts Centre.
About fig-futures
fig-futures was a project supported by Arts Council England, Art Fund, and Outset and followed the major project fig-2 in which 50 projects were presented across 50 weeks at the Institute of Contemporary Arts, London in 2015. fig-futures takes the one-week exhibition structure along with fig-2 alumni artists to four venues across the UK including Grundy Art Gallery, Blackpool; Kettle’s Yard; The Gallery at De Montfort University, Leicester; and Plymouth Arts Centre.
