Circuit Curates: Grace and Speed
17 March – 21 June 2015
This exhibition, curated collaboratively by the Circuit group, explored Henri Gaudier-Brzeska’s constantly changing drawing styles through a selection of his sketches of birds.
Over the course of three months, Circuit selected works from the collection at Kettle’s Yard that provided an insight into Gaudier-Brzeska’s evolving style – from a realistic and naturalistic depiction to abstract form, with heightened emphasis on the shapes created by the movement of the pen across the paper.
These drawings reflected the artist’s personality, his artistic development and the progression of the age. Gaudier-Brzeska aligned himself with the avant-garde Vorticist group in London. Many of its members responded to the increasing dominance of machines within their environment by trying to capture this movement within a static image.
The display was in Helen Ede’s bedroom in the Kettle’s Yard house.
