17 October 2024 - 23 February 2025

This display features a selection of photographs by the Ukrainian artist Yevheniia Laptii (b. 1992, Kharkiv), all showing the village of Cherkaski Tyshky, near Kharkiv.

This is the second part of the first project of A G E N D A, a new series of artist projects that respond to global events and address pressing issues of our time. The series aims to show how art can offer insight and understanding beyond the 24-hour news cycle.

Cherkaski Tyshky is the most enduring setting and subject of Laptii’s work. Located ten kilometres north-east of Kharkiv, close to the Russian border, the village is home to Laptii’s grandparents. On 24 February 2022, the first day of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, it was occupied by the Russian army. Laptii was staying in Cherkaski Tyshky at the time. After nine weeks under occupation, the village was liberated by Ukrainian forces.

About A G E N D A Project 1 / Part 1

Yevheniia Laptii, Deti, 2023

Part 1 of the project was on display at Kettle’s Yard in March – June 2024. The first project displayed the photograph ‘Deti’ (2023) by Laptii. At the time of the Russian invasion, Laptii was living in a village near Kharkiv, which became Russian occupied territory. Travelling via Moscow, the artist eventually returned to Ukraine in the autumn of 2022, by which time the Ukrainian army had reclaimed most of the territory east of Kharkiv. ‘Deti’ responds to this moment in the artist’s life, inspired by a photograph she took on her return to the ‘deoccupied’ territories.
