Ossip Zadkine

Born 1890 – Died 1967

Zadkine was born in Smolensk, Belarus. Primarily known as a sculptor, he was also a painter and printmaker. After attending art school in London, in c.1910 he settled in Paris, where he became part of the Cubist movement. After this time, he developed an original style, strongly influenced by non-Western art. Zadkine served as a stretcher-bearer during World War One, and was wounded in action. He spent the years of World War Two in exile in America, and died in Paris, where there is a Zadkine Museum.
