Maude Clapp
Born
Clapp was Jim Ede’s aunt. He was very fond of her, and remembered her as bringing a breath of bohemian atmosphere to the staid family home when visiting. She moved to New York when she married the poet and art historian Frederick Mortimer Clapp, who became the Director of the Frick Collection. Jim stayed with them on his first visit to the city in 1931 and again on his return with Helen in the 1940s and 1950s. He kept a number of Maud’s etchings of Venice until his move to Edinburgh in the 1970s. They show the influence of Whistler and earlier vedutisti.
