Kate Nicholson

Born 1929 – Died 2019

The daughter of Ben and Winifred Nicholson, Kate grew up with her mother between Paris, London and Cumbria in the 1930s. She studied at Bath College of Art (1949-54), where she was a pupil of Peter Lanyon. Moving to St. Ives, in 1957 Kate became an associate member of the Penwith Society. In the 1960s and 70s she painted alongside her mother in Greece, Cumbria and the Hebrides, her work encompassing these particular locations in an untutored style and with a refreshing approach to colour.

Skye (1949)

Kate Nicholson painted luminous works in still life and landscape, as well as abstract composition, from her homes in Cornwall and Cumbria and on her travels in Greece, North Africa and Scotland, often alongside her mother Winifred.

‘Skye’ (1949) was painted in the year Nicholson started studying at Corsham School of Art in Somerset, where she trained with artists Peter Lanyon and William Scott. It reflects her close attention to the effects of light and her play with colour and composition.
