Karen McLean

Karen McLean (born 1959) is a British Trinidadian artist, based in Spain. She received a BA in Art and Design from Birmingham City University in 2009 and an MFA in Fine Art from Goldsmiths College, University of London, in 2015. McLean’s work explores her experiences of growing up in post-independence Trinidad in the 1960s. Her process is rooted in historical research that interrogates the complex legacies of colonialism. She works with sound, moving image and installations incorporating a wide variety of evocative and symbolic materials, such as sugar, blue soap, wood, beading, wallpaper and hessian bags. Her work has been presented in solo exhibitions at Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool; The New Art Gallery Walsall; and Block 336, Brixton.
