Jirí Kolar

Born 1914 – Died 2002

Kolar was born in Protivin, Bohemia. A co-founder of Group 42, he began his career as a poet. In the 1950s his poems began to reach out to the visual realm, in a variety of media. In the 1960s he explored geometrical abstraction, visual poems and three-dimensional objects. Kolar is most famous for his collages and innovative art techniques, including chiasmages, rollages and wrinklages. He died in Paris.
