Gordon Baldwin

Born 1932

Gordon Baldwin was born in Lincoln and trained at the Lincoln School of Art and the Central School of Art in London. His early work included functional stoneware vessels and tin-glazed earthenware, but he later became influenced by contemporary sculpture. In the 1950s he used a range of techniques, including hand-building, often reworking and re-firing pieces several times. Reflecting his earlier training as a painter, Baldwin’s work often combines sculptural forms with abstracted painterly marks. Baldwin taught at Eton College and was awarded an OBE in 1992 and an honorary doctorate from the Royal College of Art in London in 2000. He lives and works in Shropshire.
