Dieter Roth
Born 1930 – Died 1998
Born in Hannover, Roth studied graphics and lithography at the Berner Kunstgewerbeschule (1947-51). In 1957 he moved to Iceland and developed a constructive style. However, an exhibition of Jean Tinguely’s work in Basel (1960) deeply affected him leading to a change in his approach. Roth developed a strong interest in found materials (including organic ones) and ephemerality. He also became interested in book production, co-founding several publishing companies. He died in Basel.
