Alfred Stieglitz

Born 1864 – Died 1946
Born in New York of German parents, Stieglitz became one of the most influential photographers, editors and publishers of the 20th century. Having studied photography in Germany, he returned to New York in 1890. In 1905 he founded the Little Galleries of the Photo-Secession with the help of Edward Steichen. There he organized exhibitions which contributed to raise the art of photography on the same level as painting and sculpture. Stieglitz promoted his Photo-Secessionist and Pictorialist movements by publishing the journals “Camera Notes” and “Camera Work”.
